FIRST ANNUAL BLACK STUDENT UNION CONFERENCE The First Annual National Black Student Union Conference, September 17-20, 1998, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was a success. 124 students, administrators, and advisors from 21 colleges and universities were in attendance at workshops and seminars that focused on African American student achievement. COORDINATING COMMITTEE Based on feedback from conference participants, the Coordinating Committee has recommended that the Second Annual National Black Student Union Conference should occur at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on September 24-26, 1999. This will afford the Coordinating Committee the opportunity to formulate guidelines and procedures for hosting future National Black Student Union Conferences. Your institution will receive information pertaining to this conference by January 1999. FORMAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS A formal call for proposals to host the Third Annual National Black Student Union Conference will also be issued January 1999. This call for proposals will place 85% of the conference's emphasis on student presenters. This will ensure student presentations in the following areas:
Invitations are being extended to the 21 institutions who attended the First Annual National Black Student Union Conference to serve as advisory committee members (see the list of participating institutions). THE NATIONAL BLACK STUDENT UNION OFFICE Goldy Brown III, conference convener, has submitted a proposal to the Undergraduate Research Program,University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, requesting support for maintaining the National Black Student Union as an undergraduate research project (African American Student Achievement: The Black Student Union). In order to more formalize the activities of the National Black Student Union office, the following will take place by December 1, 1998:
