I attend Hope College in Michigan. Last night, we had elections for next years officers and a white girl was elected president. I was personally appalled for many reasons. Some of them are that we, the minority student body can not seem to come together long enough to support and uplift our own people. Another is the fact that BSU will not be represented the way it should because there is no way the this new president is going to be able to effectively give and understand the black perspective on Hope's unfortunate campus. When the incoming black freshmen that I have tried so hard to recruit come in and see that we can not even hold down our own organization, what are they to think? And when that freshman is called out by his/her teacher because of the simple fact that he/she is black, this president will not be able to understand the intensity of the issue. One of my biggest issues is the way this applies back to the slave mentality of many blacks always looking for a white person to save them, or us. It seems as though something is deeply rooted in the way we relinquish our power because of immaturity and ignorance. We always complain about not having any power and rights but the very chance we can do something about it, we loose faith in ourselves and look to the white person to come and save/deliver us. Basically my fellow BSU people, tell me what you think about this. Has this happened at any of your schools?
